How do students receive a copy of their schedule?

The week before school opens, the student schedule for the upcoming year will be be made available at Open House.

How do I find out what bus my student rides and where the bus stop is located?

This information will be posted at school prior to the first day school starts. Bus drivers traditionally call each bus rider to confirm  the bus stop and the pick up times. Information can also be found at the SCPS website front page: www.scps.k12.fl.us

How do I set up a lunch account?

Parents may set up a lunch account with the cafeteria staff at pre-school orientation. Students can also submit a check to the cafeteria manager any time during the school year. Accounts may be established by check or by credit card.

As a parent, how do I arrange a parent teacher conference and when are they available?

Parents should call the Guidance office (407) 320-1554 to schedule an appointment. Appointments are available on Tuesday and Wednesday at 8:30am and 8:55am.

Must I take a physical education (P.E.) class? 

Yes, a semester of physical education is required at least once during middle school years
 

What Advanced courses are offered in Middle School?

Sixth grade offers Advanced Math and Advanced Language Arts.
Seventh grade offers Advanced Language Arts and Advanced Math (Pre-Algebra) 
Eighth grade offers Advanced Language Arts, Algebra I (for high school credit), Advanced Science, and Advanced History.

Who is eligible to take Advanced classes?

Students and parents may elect to register for advanced classes based upon student performance, teacher recommendation, test scores, or self selection.

Must I take a technology course?

Every student is required to take a semester of technology each year during Middle School.

Sixth grade offers Computer Keyboarding or Introduction to Technology.

Seventh grade offers Computer Keyboarding (if not already taken in sixth grade).

Eighth grade offers Advanced Technoloy or Computer Applications.

What if I sign up for a class and then decide I do not like it and want to change my schedule?

The course registration form is the student’s and parent’s opportunity to select academic classes and elective classes. This is an important process and should be discussed and thought about thoroughly. Schedule changes are only permitted during the first week of each semester and requires a written request by the parent submitted to the guidance counselor. When the student and parent sign the registration form it is a commitment to the course selections. Possible exceptions to the schedule change policy applies to students receiving injuries, change in eligibility for special programs, etc .

How can a student receive academic help?

Assistance is available through our tutorial program.  So each student can receive the proper attention, space in tutorial sessions is limited.

As a parent, how can I be aware of what homework my student has?

Parents can register for the FAMILY ACCESS reporting systen. This online service provides attendance, grades, and assigned tasks (homework and class work). . Some teachers use voice-mail as a "homework hotline" to announce assignments.  Parents can also access teachers by email. phone or voice mail. See the Faculty Directory.  Also, students have a daily planner to record assignments.

Are there sport programs available at Middle School?

Boys and Girls sport programs are available at Teague. We offer Cross Country, Volleyball, Track, and a variety of intramural sports.

Is there a lacrosse, football,  soccer or a baseball  team at Teague?

No, there are  community leagues that use Teague and other athletic fields.

Are there any after school programs?

There are some clubs which students may choose to participate which meet after school.

Are there any summer camps or enrichment classes open for incoming 6th graders?

There is a summer band on our campus. For the first time there is also an art camp. Please see Teague website for details.

My student was participating in the Gifted Resource program in elementary school, how many gifted classes are available?

Gifted students may select to participate in all four academic subjects – language arts, math, science and social studies.

If a student selects beginning band, must they own an instrument in order to register for beginning band?

Although some students may have instruments when they sign up for band, it is not necessary. Instrument evaluation and assignment is done in class the first few weeks of school. When this process is complete, parents will be invited to attend an instrument rental meeting with local companies present for their convenience.

Who is my guidance counselor?

The counselor is determined by your grade - 6th, 7th, or 8th. As long as you remain at Teague you will have the same counselor.

Do students get to pick the time of day they want to have their classes?

No, students classes are scheduled through a computer.

If the only electives the students can choose are Band or Chorus, how are the other electives determined for each student that has extra periods open for electives?

Students are placed in electives based upon availability in their schedule after core courses and enrichment courses are scheduled.

Do students need to bring special clothes for physical education (P.E.)?

A PE uniform is required. Tennis shoes are required.

Do the gym lockers have built-in locks?

No, each student must purchase their own combination lock for their gym locker.

What type of lunches are available?

Students may bring their own lunch or buy lunch. There are a variety of combo meals – hamburgers, cheeseburgers, pizza, salads, sandwiches, pasta and much more. The menu may be seen at http://foodservice.scps.k12.fl.us/fsweb/fshome.htm

Do students eat lunch with a specific class or teacher?

Most 6 grade students eat lunch during the same lunch period. Students may sit with anyone they choose.

How much time do students have for lunch?

Students have 30 minutes for lunch.

Do sixth grade students go on any field trips?

Yes, the numbers of field trips vary from year to year. Each team decides on the field trips they will be going on.

When are report cards given out?

Students receive a report card every nine weeks. Students will receive a progress report half way through a nine weeks  for parents to see how they are doing in classes.

Do sixth grade students have homework every night?

Students can expect homework Monday through Friday. Homework is written work, reading, reviewing, and studying for tests and quizzes. Failure to turn in homework will result in a zero.

What is a detention?

When a student does not obey school rules a teacher, administrator, or team may issue a detention.

How is it determined whether incoming 6th grader is placed in 6th Math standard or 6th Math  Advance? Parent or Student choice?

Seminole County Public Schools is a district of choice; therefore parents may choose to place their child in either a standard math class or an advanced math class.

What is the difference between Gifted Math or Advanced or Gems?

Primes is a SCPS program in elementary 5th grade math class. The GEMS program is 6th grade math for students completing Primes. Gifted math is an advanced math class and students are placed in it based upon meeting eligibility requirements on the gifted education plan.

Are students in Advanced/Gems Math and Language Arts grouped together for all of their classes?

Students are randomly assigned to a course section. Students are not grouped as a cohort that goes to the same classes throughout the day.

If you weren’t in Primes in Elementary School can you register for Gems to Middle School?

Admission to GEMS math without PRIMES math is not recommended.

If I have a student in Gifted, but not in 5th grade Primes, should she take Advanced Math or Gifted math?

Gifted.

Where can I find an explanation of the curriculum differences between Gems Gifted?

Florida Department of Education offers course descriptions for all courses offered in Florida schools.

What happens if you are in Advanced Math and not successful the 1st nine weeks? Can your child go to Standard?

A meeting with the counselor is required.
